What is FireSmart?

FireSmart Canada is a national program that helps Canadians increase community resilience to wildfire and minimize its negative impacts.  The FireSmart Program began in 1993 in response to concerns about wildfire in the wildland urban interface. Since the program began over 30 years ago, the threat of wildfire has increased significantly as our climate has, and continues to, change. FireSmart Canada has developed practical, effective and science-based tools to help homeowners be better prepared when wildfire occurs.   FireSmart starts with where you live. Research has shown that homes and their surrounding areas -- also know as the Home Ignition Zone -- are particularly vulnerable to wildfire.

How can I reduce the risk to my home?

  1. Read the FireSmart Homeowner's Manual.  The  FireSmart Homeowner's Manual, prepared by the Government of Yukon and FireSmart Canada,  Complete the FireSmart Score Card to determine your home and yard hazard score.
  2. Get the FireSmart App!  The FireSmart Begins at Home App from FireSmart Canada leads you through an assessment of your your home and provides you with specific suggestions of what you can do to make your home more resilient.  Download the app on the Apple Store and Google Play.
  3. Get a Professional FireSmart Home Assessment. The Village is working on coordinating free, 1-hour Firesmart Home Assessments. During an assessment, an assessor will visit your property, provide FireSmart recommendations, and answer your questions.  Reserve a spot on our FireSmart Home Assessment waiting list by contacting corporate@hainesjunction.ca or calling 634-7100.
