Position Title: Poll Clerk

Supervisor: Returning Officer Paulette Schatz

Remuneration: $30.00/hr 

Term:   October 2024

Training 2 hours October 1, 7 pm to 9 pm (can be changed)

 

Principal Tasks (Polling Day Thursday October 17) 

7:30 am to 8 pm plus hours to count ballots

 

Assists the Returning Officer and Deputy Returning Officer to  

  • Open and close the polling station. 
  • Set up the poll with the necessary supplies.
  • Ensure that all partisan material is removed.
  • Ensure voting proceeds in an orderly fashion.
  • Welcome voters to the polling station and ensure they have their proof of identity ready to present.
  • Prepare forms and maintain records e.g. Application for Registration/Oath of Registered Voter and the Village of Haines Junction Eligible Voter Registration Form
  • Hand the ballot to the elector and provide the instructions to follow
  • Assist, as required,  to count the ballots (using tally sheet), complete the related forms (Ballot Account) and communicate the results to designated Municipal Officer (CAO).
  • Clean up polling station at the end of day. 

 

Principal Tasks (Advanced polling day/Mobile Poll Thursday October 10)

7:30 am to 8 pm 

  • As above but no counting of votes. 
  • Mobile Voting will be for voters due to being housebound/confined, a physical disability, or circumstances beyond the person’s control. A list of voters requesting to use the Mobile Voting Option will be available.
  • Two Election Officers (Returning Officer and Deputy Returning Officer but can involve Poll Clerk, if required) will travel from residence to residence on the Advance Poll Mobile Voting Day. 

 

Overview of Qualifications

  • Be a Canadian Citizen
  • Be at least 16 years old on polling day
  • Have experience in managing large groups to help electors circulate in an orderly fashion
  • Have experience in dealing with the public
  • Have experience in conflict resolution
  • Be tactful and exercise good judgment
  • Remain polite and courteous (demonstrate professionalism)
