Recreation and Events Administrator
Haines Junction lies on the edge the vast and spectacular wilderness of Kluane National Park including the largest internationally protected area on earth and the planet’s largest non-polar ice fields. It is a community that offers a high quality of living with unparalleled recreational opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast. Located in the southwestern corner of the Yukon Territory, approximately 160 kilometers from Yukon’s capital city Whitehorse, Haines Junction and the surrounding area is home to roughly 900 residents, and we are looking for one more.
The Village of Haines Junction invites applications for the full-time position of Recreation and Events Administrator. We offer a competitive benefits package and a positive and highly diverse working environment. This is a bargaining unit position within the local of Y042 (Yukon Employees union) with a starting wage of $28.00 per hour.
General Summary
Reporting to the CAO, this position works in partnership with local governments, Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, and community groups to coordinate, and deliver recreation, sports, and leisure programs, activities, services, and events. This position maintains clean and safe facilities, opportunities for sport and recreation and promotes a healthy lifestyle for all community residents.
Duties and Responsibilities - include but are not limited to the following
- Ensures Village recreation and event facilities are maintained in order to ensure a safe, clean and appropriate environment for recreation activities
- Plans and develops sport, recreation, and cultural programs, and potential facilities to ensure that activities and events are made available for all community members
- Implements recreation programs to ensure that residents have access to sport, recreation and leisure activities
- Administers recreation programs to ensure that programs are delivered within guidelines and budgets
- Promotes recreation and sport programs in order to ensure that residents are aware of available opportunities and activities
- Provides leadership, guidance and supervision to the team
- Completes special requests or projects or to participate in or coordinate evening and off-hour activities
- Performs operating roles, as required
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Grade 12
- Preference will be given to those with a diploma in Recreation and Leisure Services, or in a similar field
- Experience in community outreach, programming, and facilities management, preferably in a unionized setting is required
- Completion of a Recreation Facility Operators Program would be an asset
- Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel)
- Supervisory training and/or experience is preferred
- Willingness to obtain playground safety inspection certification (CPSI)
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills, Ability
- In-depth knowledge of events coordination and planning
- Knowledge of the management and operation of recreation facilities and equipment
- Knowledge of recreation, sport and leisure program administration
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and procedures
- Sound knowledge and the ability to follow health and safety rules and regulations.
- Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Ability to establish, foster and maintain effective relationships with local organizations.
- Ability to coordinate, plan, and organize events and activities
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work within tight deadlines
- Ability to deal with emergencies and stressful situations
- Ability to deal professionally with the general public while maintaining respect and confidentiality
- Strong customer service orientation, interpersonal, consultative, problem-solving, and analytical skills
- Ability to develop communications material
- Strong coaching and mentorship skills
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Job Requirements
- Willing to work evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
- Willing to travel to Whitehorse and/or other communities as required.
- Willing to work in varying weather conditions.
- Willing to accommodate schedule to support community events.
- Ability to handle and lift objects up to 30 kgs.
- Willing to wear approved personal protective equipment.
Conditions of Employment
- Valid Yukon Class 5 driver’s license
- RCMP Vulnerable Sector Check
- Standard First Aid and CPR to level C
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS)
- Willing to take training
